Description for Maxwell
Maxwell is on the east side of Horsetooth Reservoir across the water from Lory State Park, which makes it an easy place to get to just after work or at lunch (especially if you work at the University). The ride is pretty tough, there are lots of technical parts which means you have to be on your game. The grind up will get your heart beating and have you gasping for air the first few times you ride here, of course all the climbing means you get a sweet ride down.
This is not the trail you bring your buddy who has never mountain biked to ride, it is tough and your buddy will get hurt. Most people consider Maxwell to be an advanced ride, I can see how you would get that impression your first time here, I know a lot of solid intermediate riders that can do it just fine, they hop off there bike here and there and struggle with the climb but overall it helps them improve.
The only downside to this trail is all the foot traffic, there are tons of hikers and runners at any given time, it is great to see the trail get so much use, but it is hard to bomb down the trail when you are worried about taking someone out, plus they often get in your way when you are grinding up causing you to dismount. Try to get out early especially on weekends.
