The finished sections of the Palmetto Trail present a challenge to ride from the coast to Poinsett State Park, a distance of approximately 145 miles. Riding some sections of the Palmetto Trail demand special preparation, because the water table is so high you’ll likely find long sections of ground where rainfall “pools.” Sometimes, the riding here is just plain wet… unless you opt to balance across narrow, raised platforms made from split telephone poles.
Although you can find challenging trails in the hills north of Greenville and Clemson, some of the State’s best riding occurs in an area known as the Upper Savannah Valley, where there are 25 trails with some 150 miles open to mountain bikers.
