Description for Applegate Lake
It's a great trail with lots of rolling single track trails primarily next to water with lots of steep and consistent drops. A long fireroad is used for about a mile and is all downhill with lots of room and a few miles are on road while crossing the dam to loop back around.

This is a beautiful trail and very scenic, but if it is your first trail ride ever, be cautious and go with a more experienced rider. The single track is single track with trees leaning out over the trail on the uphill side and steep drop offs on the downhill side. Several places have large rocks you have to negotiate as well as unexpected climbs after coming around a blind turn. If you aren't ready for them and can't adjust gears quickly enough you'll be off your bike. If you are traveling clockwise and planning to go all the way around, you will hit a pretty steep climb and rock slide areas with steep drop offs to the lake. If you aren't ready for this it can be intimidating. That being said, it was my first trail ride ever. I'm not a young buck (being in the 40+ category) and mountain biking is totally new to me. I went with a more experienced mountain biker who prepped me for each of the potential trouble spots. Yes, I did come off my bike and had to walk, but I made it the entire way around...in the winter when it was wet and muddy and slick leaves and rocks were an issue. Furthermore, I was riding on hybrid tires not full mountain trail tires. In all, I'd review this as a great trail, but not one to tackle in the winter as a beginner like I did. I definitely see why the more experienced riders like it and train here often. It is beautiful and has enough to it to keep the adrenaline pumping. I'm going to rate it regarding technical difficulty and aerobic difficulty, but please understand, I am a beginner and not exactly in shape for this kind of thing, and that should be considered by readers.

I had only been mountain biking a couple times before I did this trail. I had no trouble with the technical parts, but I had some trouble with the uphill parts. No matter which direction you go on this trail there will be a good amount of uphill, but plenty of exciting downhill.
