Description for Cabin John Trail
Cabin John is a great entry level trail for beginner mountain bikers. It is a good trail for being right next to the beltway. The trail is a relaxing ride along the stream. Experienced riders will likely want to skip this one.

The directions to the trail put you at a cul de sac when there is an actual park and parking lot called cabin john park. We rode the first mile or so from the cul de sac on the mountainbiketrails app and it was alright for a beginners trail. The trail was well maintained and overall very easy. After the first mile you come to a pretty busy road and there is a sign that says the trail has been rerouted. The map on the sign was very confusing and we ended up taking the old section that was 'supposedly' being rerouted. This section was not very fun. Overall the map was confusing, a small section of trail was fun but the majority was just a simple bike path through the woods. No obstacles, no drops, not many downhills or much elevation change. Good for beginners but confusing! Even for an intermediate rider.

I live near this location and have taken this ride on numerous occasions, mostly between Democracy and Tuckerman Lane. Parking is available at lots of locations, including at the Indoor Tennis Center on the north side of Democracy Blvd., or near the indoor ice rink off Westlake Blvd just past the side entrance to Montgomery Mall (trails are accessible at at the parking near the last ball field).
This is partly out and back, but can be ridden as a type of loop between Democracy and Tuckerman. Much of the riding is along the stream at the bottom of the hill, and there are a few bridge crossings and some rock gardens, but not difficult riding. Some of the trails are a little rutted out from lack of maintenance and poor design, but still pretty easy to ride.
The trails on the outside areas are mostly out and back, and not as frequently ridden, and the foliage can get a little overgrown, but still good for a warmup ride. All in all, a good close in spot for easy warmup rides or beginning mtb, or just checking out another park.
