Description for Canal Loop
Canal Loop, North South Trail, and Jenny Ridge are all good LBL rides, it is a great way to spend the weekend, go out camp at Nickel Branch and ride all 3 trails. Out of the three, this one seems to get the least use. The trail requires some intermediate bike handling skills, but it is a good place for beginners that want to start pushing themselves, they may be off their bike quite a bit, hiking over roots and rocks but nothing too crazy.
The trail has 2 distinct halves, the Kentucky Lake side has more hills, with a more technical aspect, and the Barkley side is more open with less hills. Most riders ride the loop counterclockwise, but it can be ridden either way. The trail can be accessed from several points with the most common being the North Welcome Center of the LBL. The second most common access is at the Wood-N-Wave bike shop in Grand Rivers, KY. There are several races and competitions held at various times on the loop.
Check the Wood N Wave website for the current trail conditions, it is updated daily:

The trail has 2 distinct halves, the ky lake side has more hills, with a more technical aspect, and the Barkley side more open less hills. The total length is 11.5 miles. An expert mtb can do it in around an hour, but the best I ever did was 1.5 hours. Most riders ride the loop counterclockwise, but it can be risen either way. The trail can be accessed from several points with the most common being the North welcome center of the LBL. The second most common access is at the wood-n-wave bike shop in Grand Rivers KY. There are several races and competions held at various times on the loop, I would call Wood-n-wave for more info if you are in those types of events
