Description for Washington Gulch Trail 403
The 403 Trail is another Crested Butte classic, for many years I only visited the area in the winter, I don't know what I was thinking, the trails here are amazing. We heard mixed things about this trail, some warned us that is is overly rutted out and just to technical to ride, while some said it is the greatest stretch of trail in the state. Well, both camps are right, the trail has some sections that are in need of maintenance, some places that are nearly unrideable, but it has some amazing sections of trail.
The initial climb on Washington Gulch is pretty grueling, especially if you are acclimated to the altitude. But once that is out of the way you get a hard (but short) technical descent that leads you into the forest, here is where the fun factor picks up and the roller coaster ride begins.
This is an advanced ride, Intermediate riders will likely be off the bike a lot, and beginners should not even consider it. This ride can be done as a loop to let you show your climbing, lung, and leg skills, or you can shuttle it.
