Description for 401 Trail
The 401 Trail should be on every mountain bikers Must Ride list, it is worth a trip to Colorado just for this one ride, out of all the trails that we have ridden the 401 is a real stand out. Often when we go to a trail that has this much hype we leave feeling a bit disappointed, some how it does not live up to what we built up in our minds, that didn't happen for this ride.
The 401 is a high altitude picturesque alpine singletrack ride through forest and meadows. It can be ridden as a loop or shuttled, if you have not acclimated, do the shuttle, or if someone is offering to shuttle you, do the shuttle. Assuming that you are riding the trail from the shuttle drop, you will enjoy ripping down the mountain on smooth, fast, rolling trail. The ride is not technically challenging, and Intermediate riders will be able to ride almost everything the trail as to throw at them, there are some places on the trail with a lot of exposure so ride within your limits, it certainly is not a beginner friendly trail.
The second part of the ride does have a fair amount of climbing and there may be a few hike-a-bike sections for anyone that is not part mountain goat.
Bring your camera, you will not want to miss the great photo opportunities!
