Description for Los Pinetos Trail
Park at Placerita Nature Center about a mile off the 14 to the south on Placerita Canyon road. Gear up and head to the back of the area and find the trail head well marked at the back. The ride consists of a mile of nice fun creek trail followed by a moderate climb to the camp area. Then the fun begins. Take a right onto the Los Pinetos trail and prepare for a couple of miles of climbing (about 1800 ft total) with some of it crazy steep. A real lung buster. The top offers great views and a toilet. Turn around and enjoy the fast, steep and flowing downhill the way you rode up. PLEASE be respectful and mindful of hikers or we will lose this great trail.

Park at the end of Newhall road right off Highway 14 in the lot. Enter at the sign that says Whitney Canyon Park and get ready to climb! It is straight up for 5 miles on an old dirt road that is dry, sandy and some granite but not too rutty. You will get to the top and be happy for the smooth ride to the bathroom and shade.
Turn a hard left and look for the sign that says Los Pinetos trail and get ready for some nice single track downhill under the trees which is especially nice if you just climbed up the road in the hot sun.
Be Careful for hikers especially on the weekends! The descent then turns steep and dry causing a lot of sliding with cliff on the side.
Once you get to the bottom and enter the campground turn immediately to your left and keep riding and you will find a nice flat road that is well groomed that follows Placerita Canyon Road which takes you back to your parking lot. You can take the road by turning right when you get to the campground but it is way more dangerous with the high speed traffic. And taking the trail to the left will minimize your contact with crazy fast and irritated drivers. Remember this is part of Los Angeles and no matter when or what time everyone is in a hurry!
Foolow Placerita Canyon Road until the first Left which is Sierra Hwy. Follow this to Newhall and turn left and go fast so as not to get run over by the traffic that wants on the Highway 14. Ride under the overpass and you are back where you started.
Total miles about 11.5 mi. Ascent is 2200 ft starting at 1350ft reaching about 3500 ft up. Makes for great views at the top. A nice ride that takes about 1:30 to 2:00 hours depending on how fast you go.
If you are out of shape and not a well seasoned MTBKR this will destroy you! If you have at least intermediate skill and fairly well conditioned aerobic capacity it should be no problem.
Remember WATCH OUT FOR HIKERS and be friendly. They also have the right of way as well as do horses at least that is what the signs say.
