So, I am looking to mount my 3GS to my Bike but as always I am going against the grain and want to make my own mount as most that exist just aren't to my liking. I want to mount the 3GS with an otterbox defender to my stem, and possible have the option to move it to the handle bar to shoot video, or keep on stem and shoot video if possible. I have found one that might work but need to see more pictures of the mount to see if I can mod it. link below Stem Mount
Does anyone have that mount? My only concern is that I MTB and don't know if that mount will move or not, bounce?
Any ideas?

Hmm I've had the same thought, it'd be cool to video while you ride with your iPhone! But then I get thinking, is it really worth some sweet video to risk your iPhone? I have an iP4, so it'd be pretty costly to wreck (as I do often haha).
What I always do, is throw my iPhone in my pack and track it with AccuTerra, and I bought a cheap helmet cam. The quality isn't as good, but I'm not risking my $1k piece of technology...

I was thinking of a mount as well, but with a periscope attachment on the front. That way you could take video and still use the gps features(see your stats and where you are at a glance). But like MtnBiker said, it better be a pretty good mount.

I've been using this one the past few days: tigratechnology.com
HOWEVER, it won't work out of the box. You have to do a quick mod or it will fly off the handlebars! lol.

I've done a number of road bike rides hitting washboard roads at 42+mph and running over rail road tracks. Also did a 15 mile mountain bike ride with 2 to 3 foot drops and many rock garden passes and it hasn't budged. Really happy with it. But you HAVE to make the mod. My first ride the phone flew off the handlebars and hit the road (concrete) at 35+mph. Luckily the case protected it and both came out ok (save for some scratches on the case).
I've talked to the company and they plan to make adjustments to the design based on my findings.

Your link didn't send me to the mount, I am interested in it could you post a direct link to the mount?

Yes I would not be brave enough to use my iP4 for this that is why I am using the extra 3GS I own. And an Otterbox Defender Case.
-Normally I use the Timbuk2 phone case (linkage) strapped to my camel-pack and record my trail, with GPS kit, mostly just using the sweet-nisity dashboard for a better than bike computer stats page. I will be doing more and more geocaching on the bike trips and am looking to mount the 3GS to avoid the constant stopping and checking.

Yeah I have jailbroken (which is now totally legal, so don't delete my post) the 3GS I have as it is an extra phone, I decided to not sell when I got the iP4. and there is a sweet hack to un-restrict the video quality - my 3GS now records 1080 x 800 at a high frame rate than the 3GS recorded at lower resolution - still not light but I have 2 NiteRider lights that will help out a ton.
The hard part is getting the iphone positioned on the bike to record good video and be sturdy
Sorry for the back to back replies.

I hadn't seen that one before, you'll have to reply back with your findings.

Yea, agree. I want something that will stand up to a real beating but doesn't take up a lot of space. The stem mount one kind of looks like it will snap off, but maybe if its metal that isn't such a concern.

Don't forget, you need to replace the plastic clippy thing with an actual metal bolt like this:

Can you post up some pics of the mount? That one looks real good but I would like to see how it mounts to the bike? will it go on the stem?
EDIT:
So I read the description and this case looks like my answer!! Can you tell me anything else about it? needs metal screws (your pictures don't do anything for me, but maybe they will make sense when I get the mount)
Do you think I will bounce much on a mtn bike ride?
Any other quirks? edited by MtnBiker on 11/19/2010

This mount is CRAP (no offense to you)! Just got it in the mail, the iphone 4 version with inserts for each device. this thing does not seal, no way in H3ll this things is even close to water resistant. The back does pop off like you were saying I could fix that but not sure the price is worth fixing it.

Well, I agree and disagree. ;-)
As far as water protection, it is close to crap. It will protect from minor sprinkles and sweat but not from downpour and certainly not immersion. However, if I expect rain or immersion I simply put the phone in a ziploc bag before putting it in the case. This seems to work perfectly.
As far as phone protection I have to say it has so far been awesome. I've done over 250 miles on road and on very rough mountain bike terrain. I have crashed twice (hard) on the mountain bike and although it did come off the bar (as it should), the case and phone were in perfect shape after. I remounted and was back riding.
As to whether or not it is worth making the mods, well, lets just say if there were a better option I totally agree. But as things are now, this has been a pretty good solution for me.
If anyone would benefit from a closer inspection post a note and i'll try to get some better photos and maybe a vid.

Just found this. It is nearly the same design but with a way better water seal design. It also has a way more secure case closure. Unfortunately, it is still using the crappy plastic clippy thing for the mount so it will still need the mod I described earlier. The other advantage is it has extra space so you could potentially put a small external battery in there. I just ordered one so I'll post back my findings once I've hammered on it for a while.
