Ok, so I went on a pretty intense ride today, and I have the Hayes Nine hydraulic brakes. I just gotta say, I'm not impressed. Hayes kinda sucked a big one on those.

Does anyone have any preferences when it comes to the brakes? From what my buddies say, Avid is the way to go. I had some cheap Tektro Aurigas on my other bike, and they were satisfactory.

The brakes I'm really wondering about are the Avid Elixir Fives. I just found some for cheap, and didn't want to pass them up so I bought them. Any reviews? Thanks!

I have the Elixer Fives on one of my bikes. They're bomber, just like all the Elixers, just maybe a little heavier. Super easy to adjust and bleed. They make a bit of noise when they get wet, but hey, you've got to have a trail horn to let the slow guys know you're coming.

I got to ride on some Hope brakes out in Santa Fe and I was really impressed. Wet they really didn't make any noise, and they had some great grip.

Yes my Hayes are gone too as they suck and now enjoy my Elixers!

That's good to hear! I found a pair of new Elixir Fives for $200, so I figured that was definitely worth it. I think I'm gonna throw my Hayes Nine on my Hardtail, and keep the Elixirs on my FS.
